Movin', Movin', Movin'

Keep them doggies movin', Apple cores.
(I just felt a song comin' on---ya know, the song, Rawhide?)
Just about halfway there, now.  Fifteen rows are halfway, and then fifteen more rows.
I'm almost done stitching row 14 on---Wahoo!  I'm not really enjoying this project as much as I thought I would, because of the curved piecing, but I will love it when it's time to quilt it.  I think I'm going to quilt it by machine, cause I need it to speed up a little bit...I need a finish.  I'm not sure how I want it quilted yet, maybe a diagonal S-curve across the blocks.

It's been pretty nice the last couple of days--upper 80's for the highs, but I think today it's going back up close to 100 degrees for a few days--Uck!
I'm glad I don't live in Texas, they've really got it bad.

Jammy Day

What is it about quilters and new pincushions?  I love them.  This one will be great for applique with it's 24 small spools of thread---24 colors.  How great is that?

I found a tutorial on line, but I can't remember where, for this Monkey Pincushion.  I had made notes in one of my sewing journals on how to do it.  So yesterday I got inspired to make a pattern with these tools.  I used a 10 inch dinner plate for my first circle, then folded my freezer paper twice to find the center.  With my compass I drew a seven inch circle in the center, and using a protractor, I marked 30 degree increments for the divisions in the circle, and connected them with a ruler.  I used a single edged razor blade for cutting out the slots, but you could use an x-acto knife.

I found the tutorial here, and here.
Here is a pattern thats real cute, also.
Here's a close up for the sewing instructions, if you're interested--click the picture twice.
RST= right sides together.
WST= wrong sides together.

I marked the blue side, but....

the brown side was what needed marked since I was using that for the outer side.

I'm having a jammy day today--I love jammy days, because I get so much done.

I can't wait for my next applique project.

I thought brown would go with my ottoman and couch, since that is where it will be when I'm sewing by hand.  My ottoman gets a little cluttered sometimes when I'm sewing.

Oops!

The good news is, I made three more rows of apple cores---Yea!

I've been trying hard to make sure I get the first apple core turned the right direction so the row will line up with the one just finished.  Oops!  I needed row ten to go the other direction, so now I am working on a row to fit in between the two.  The others fit okay, so one row is all I need to fix the problem.  I will just need to renumber the rows

I keep a number pinned to the left side of each row so I will know how to join my rows when I'm ready to do that.  The new row will be row No. 10, then these will be rows No. 11, 12, and 13.

I lay out my new rows so they look pleasing to my eye then gather them up in order with the left apple core on on top, then give them a row number, and pin them together.  Who knew it would be this complicated.  Things are never as simple as you think they will be, but it's really not that hard unless you mess up.  I think maybe I need to draw an arrow on my labels, so I don't do this again.

Craft Day, and Pink flowers

Today is craft day at my sister Alice's house, where I plan to work on this poor forsaken project.  Curves in a hand piece project makes slow work, but I need to get going on it again.

I love pink flowers, can ya tell?
Magic  Lily here--or as my MIL calls them, "Naked Ladies"...
(sorry, fogged lens, and no flash with a flash setting)

Hollyhocks...

Zinnias...

Spider flower, or Cleome...

Gladiolas...

more Hollyhocks...

and a porch full of pink.

Summer Delight

I just have to show some flowers in my garden as of this week...
...a beautiful dahlia...

...hollyhocks...

...and I know these aren't flowers, but my elephant ears are so stinkin' big.

I trimmed them up a little, to get rid of some leaves that were terribly scalded by the recent horrible heat wave that seems to be over for the present time.  My poor impatiens may never recover.

My flowerbed that I worked so hard on is finally starting to look good--somewhat anyway.  There is just too much shade back there for it to produce the abundance of flowers I enjoy.  I may have to rethink what I will plant back there next year, God willing, that is.

This morning's beautiful sky...

It got me a late start on making our breakfast, and hubby's lunch, but it was worth it.

Today is our baby daughter's birthday, so I gotta get crackin'.  She ain't no baby, but she will always be my baby.  I love all my girls.  They are each so special to me in their own way.

Red Onion Dinner

On our recent trip to Joplin we went to the Red Onion Cafe after taking pictures and checking on our old house.  I asked my daughter to take pictures  of our food with her new phone for me so I could blog about it.  You know how we bloggers are...we can't let a good opportunity pass without taking advantage of it.  This is what Erin and my hubby (her daddy) had:  Salad, and......

Danny's coconut fried chicken, with broccoli, mashed potatoes and bread.  It was too much for Erin, so she shared some of her chicken with us.

Here's what I had:  Coconut fried chicken salad.
Now doesn't that look good?  It was quite yummy.

Joplin Visit

We have been wanting to go to Joplin, and see if the house we had built for us was still standing.  So last evening our youngest daughter, Erin , hubby and I, did just that.  We lived in Joplin for 3-4 years when we were first married.  This is the house, and it looks like it got  new roof, but it looks pretty good.

The apartments across the street don't look so good however.

We drove a couple of blocks north, and this is the area where my hubby's boss lived.

When we lived in Joplin there was a tornado that went down seventh street.  We weren't aware of it though, and his boss came and got him to take him to work because of all the injured.  (He worked at St. Johns Hospital.)  Funny thing though,  Hubby said his boss disappeared while he did all the work.

This is St. John's Hospital on the horizon.  Not much else is left of the area.  They have got a lot of the debris cleaned up according to the news.  This is the first I've seen of it, and it looks pretty barren.

Our oldest daughter, Jennifer, was born in this hospital.

The area north of the hospital is just a lot of foundations of the homes that were there.

I took these pictures through the window of our car.
(You can see the reflection of my striped top in some of the pictures.)  It's hard to imagine how they will ever come back.

Next, I have some pictures of the schools:

The picture below is a distant picture of the high school.  If you click on it you can see the devastation.

Another school here.

I'm not sure if this was a school or not.
(My hubby informed me this was the front of the High School.)

Further north we drove by the rental house we lived in while ours was being built.  It looks a little different now.  There was a huge tree out front and a tall hedge along the front when we lived there.

After we moved away we were in a tornado where we live now.  I wrote about it here.
I wish Joplin the best in their recovery.  They say what doesn't kill you makes you stronger.  I'm sure they are getting stronger, but it's a hard process, and their losses are so sad.

Hot, Hot, Hot!

I can't remember when we've had such hot weather.  It seems like the whole month of July was much hotter than normal.

I've been doing a lot of watering to keep my flowers going, although I missed a couple and they're dead.
The lawn isn't looking too good either.

It got up 108.3 yesterday a little after we took this picture yesterday.

I took this picture (below) a few minutes ago.
I'm ready for some cooler weather, but I don't think it's gonna happen any time soon.
What would we do without air conditioning.  I would probably spend a lot of time in a pool of water.
